When trading shares through IRESS, it is important to understand the costs associated with trading. The key charges you will encounter are Commission Fees, which apply when opening and closing trades, and Financing Fees, which apply when positions are held overnight. These are explained below.
Commission Fees
A Commission Fee is charged each time you open or close a Share CFD position.
The commission is calculated based on the value of the share transaction (Contract Value), not on the margin you deposit. This means the fee reflects the size of your trade, rather than the amount of capital you have set aside as margin.
Commission fees may be charged as:
- a percentage of the trade value, or
- a cents-per-share (CPS) amount.
Applicable commission rates vary by exchange and may change over time.
Financing Fees
A Financing Fee applies to Share trade positions that remain open overnight.
When you hold a position beyond the close of the trading day, a financing charge is applied to reflect the cost of maintaining that open position. The rate is based on a benchmark financing rate, which varies by exchange and currency, and is applied daily to the value of the open position.
Daily financing fees are calculated using the following formula:
- Number of CFDs × Closing Price × Financing Rate ÷ days in the year
Financing fees are charged each day the position remains open and stop applying once the position is closed.
In addition to applicable Commission Fees and Financing Fees, exchange-related charges may apply depending on the market in which you trade. These may include fees such as levy fees, stamp duties, clearing fees, or other exchange-imposed charges, which may be applied when trades are opened and closed. The availability and amount of these fees vary by exchange and market.
